Physical Education

The purpose of Wood Acres’ Physical Education program is to help students acquire the knowledge, processes, skills, and confidence needed to engage in meaningful physical activity both in the present and for a lifetime.  The practice of leading a physically active lifestyle will bring about personal enjoyment, challenge, satisfaction, and a health enhancing level of personal fitness.  Parents love our PE program because it keeps their kids active and happy.  Students love our PE program because it is fun!  A strong steady emphasis on sportmanship overarches each activity and experience.

Early School PE classes focus on developing gross motor skills.  Before each class, students warm up their muscles and lungs by stretching and participating in aerobic conditioning.  Students practice running, skipping, and hopping.  Our littlest students also love the special units in ball handling, gymnastics, dance, soccer, and field hockey.

Grammar and Upper School students participate in a health related fitness program which emphasizes lifetime participation in moderate to vigorous activity as a means of promoting fitness and health.  Aerobic capacity, muscular strength/endurance, flexibility, and body composition are the focus of Wood Acres’ Grammar and Upper School’s health and physical education program.  This creative program is designed to offer information to the students so they are equipped with the knowledge to make smart decisions in developing healthy bodies, attitudes, and behavioral patterns.  It provides students with an understanding of the dynamics of individual, dual, team sports, as well as sportsmanship.  Upper School classes including Zumba, Fencing, Ultimate Frisbee, Aerobics, and volleyball offer students to work on the Presidential Physical Fitness Award.

All Wood Acres’ students from youngest to oldest are always encouraged to focus on teamwork, fair play, and doing one’s best, whether it is in the classroom, in PE class or on a field.  It’s the Wood Acres way!
