Don’t Get Burned By Sunscreen

The Wood Acres Phroneins, a group of eighth graders, were interested in finding out whether there is a large enough difference in sun protection factors (SPFs) to substantiate the increased cost of higher value SPFs. After establishing an elective group and getting funding from The American Chemical Society, they began their research. For the past five months, they have been working through the scientific method and are ready to present their findings in a fun, interactive format. As one of 100 selected exhibitors from the greater Atlanta area, the Phroneins will be shedding a little light on SPF values at The Atlanta Science Festival located in Centennial Park from 11:00-4:00 on Saturday, March 28th. Check them out at booth 32 in the Thrive section. They will be sandwiched between booths from Georgia Tech and Emory! For more information on The Atlanta Science Festival, please click on the link below. The Phroneins will be at Exploration Expo, a FREE, interactive science event. http://atlantasciencefestival.org/expo

7th/8th Field Trip to Yerkes Primate Research Center and Emory!

Friday’s field trip was amazing! At Yerkes, we toured two different malaria labs, spoke with two neurophysiologists, handled an actual human brain, and learned more about the research happening at the center for biomedical and behavioral research . After a wonderful outdoor lunch on the Emory campus, we headed off to Emory University’s Center for Selective C-H Functionalization, which brings together scientists from leading research universities across the country working to revolutionize the field of organic synthesis. There, we had the chance to meet with many chemists, tour their labs, and see a few eye-opening chemical reactions. It was an experience to always remember!

Constitution Day Celebration

We the People…celebrated the 224th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution of the United States today!

The Wood Acres School was awash in red, white, and blue as hundreds of students and families came together on the campus Quad to Rally ‘round the Flag for this special occasion.

We retired our old colors and posted the bright new flag with a moving flag ceremony done by the Wheeler High School Jr. AFROTC under the leadership of Sgt. Love. The flag was flown over the US Capitol just for Wood Acres in honor of the new school year.

We cheered, we sang, we laughed, and we learned as a united school family…“We the People.”

We were even visited by the 39 signers of the Constitution and enjoyed a surprise finale of a mini flash mob of enthusiastic students singing “Firework.”

At the Wood Acres School we develop the habits of citizenship and pride in our country in word and in action, in song and in verse, in heart and in mind. And “We the People” had a wonderful time! Hooray for the Red, White, and Blue! Happy 224th birthday, Constitution!
