5th Grade Weekly Update Week of January 22nd
Math: On Tuesday, we reviewed multiplying mixed numbers and introduced the topic of dividing fractions. We took out common household items, like measuring cups, and students discovered how we unknowingly use the concept of dividing fractions in our daily lives! Then, we practiced modeling division sentences using pictures. This week, students will learn how the procedures for dividing fractions by fractions, whole numbers, and mixed numbers. Once students have a firm understanding of the procedural knowledge, we will shift our focus on word problems.
Science: On Tuesday, students performed the songs they created about the similarities and differences between mass and weight. Then, they worked with partners to describe how unbalanced forces affect an object using vector diagrams. When we return to school, we will head into lab to measure the frictional force acting on an object and discover how an object’s mass affects frictional force.
ELA: This week we will play catch up from our crazy week last week! Hopefully, we’ll get more time working on note cards for research papers! We’ll review capitalization and abbreviations in grammar. Students will receive new Power Words for their Week 15 Studies Weekly. Choosing vocabulary terms from our Studies Weekly and identifying their parts of speech in context and inferring meaning from the text are important skills to develop fluent reading abilities.
History: We will pick up right where we left off last week, studying Congressional and Presidential Reconstruction plans. We will also look at the aftereffects of the Civil War in politics, how secret secret societies like the Klu Klux Klan were formed, and groups that were created from this era: scalawags and carpetbaggers.
