Weekly Update from Mrs. Pumphrey
We had a great week this week in our room! Your children love to help and are very responsible in doing their class jobs, as well as helping around the classroom. I am impressed with how much we accomplished for the second week of school! They love the library lounge area in our class and the math tile games I have introduced to them. The following are important dates, notes and what’s going on in our classroom.

What’s Going on in our Classroom:
Reading: Next week we will read, “The Trial of Cardigan Jones.” Throughout the story we will focus on reading comprehension questions and will continually refer back to the story to confirm our answer choice. Test on Friday. Please remember to sign the Reading Log every night! The reading log counts as a monthly comprehension grade.
Writing: We have begun our review of cursive, and learned about indenting paragraphs. Next week, the children will be writing a story about themselves using Lois Lowry’s, Gooney Bird Greene as a model for writing. We are going through the writer’s process of brainstorming, writing, proofreading, and adding long, descriptive sentences to entice our readers. The final pieces will be on display!
Spelling: Our spelling words next week are: place, value, hundred, thousand, million, less than, greater than, equal, science, properties, matter, solid, liquid, gas, volume, mass, chemical, physical, change and balance. Spelling homework is due on Friday. Test will be on Friday.
Vocabulary: Unit 1 words are: allow, bitter, common, faint, firm, force, goal, patient, prefer, and trace. We practice using the vocabulary words all day long through skits, conversation games, and tallying the words on the board. Visit vocabularyworkshop.com to help your child prepare for Friday’s test.
Math: Our next units in Math are counting and rounding money & telling time to the nearest minute. We will be taking a test over chapter 1 next week.
Grammar: We continue to work on Unit 1 in our Grammar Workbook.
History: Students are creating their very own maps of Wood Acres and will create a treasure map using cardinal and intermediate directions.
Science: Next week we are headed into the Beaker, Jr. to continue our experiments on Properties of Matter.
As always, call, text, or email me with questions. Have a great weekend!
