Weekly Update November 11, 2019

Hello Everyone,

We had a great, yet busy week this week in second grade! The kids were SO excited to read their play that they will be performing and get their parts. I will list kids and their parts below. I have costumes for nearly every food-however, if you would like to create your own costume for your child you are more than welcome to do so! The kids will be working over the course of the next two weeks to memorize their lines, sing songs, and tell jokes. There is much work that goes into this production, but they are very excited and eager learners. I have no doubt they will do a wonderful job.

Parts for Play:

Regan: Mashed Potatoes, and Cousin
Avery: Salad, and Aunt Lucy
Pamela: Cranberry Sauce, Meghan
Isaac: Stuffing, Dad
Morgan: Pumpkin Pie, and Grandma
Emerson: Grandpa
Addison: Gravy, Mom
Jack: Narrator
Demetri: Turkey, Neighbor
Jett: Biscuits, Sparky

Important Notes:
-Book Reports for November/December will be coming home today. Please be sure to read through the guidelines. Students will be presenting their True/False facts to the class. Please note they DO NOT need to memorize their facts. However, they will need to be able to speak knowledgeably about their supplemental piece.

I have some great National Geographic Books that the class is more than welcome to use for their book reports. Otherwise, they are fairly cheap to buy on Amazon, and are a great, age appropriate resource of information.

Speaking of book reports….I was BLOWN AWAY with the flipbooks that came into me on Tuesday. I loved the detail and care that went into each page, and the hard work really showed. I did hand back a few flipbooks and asked that they add a little more color/detail to some pages, and we discussed how adding just a LITTLE bit more can make a huge difference- they agreed! I am still taking time to look through each one and will send home grades soon.

Play/Feast: Our second grade play will be Thursday, November 21 at 11:00 with our feast following around 11:30/11:45. A sign up genius will be/has been sent out for food that we will need for the feast.

This Week:

Reading: This week we will be reading Ah, Music, an informational text. Our essential question for the week will be ‘what are different ways to enjoy music?’

Grammar: Our grammar skill this week focuses on expanding and rearranging compound sentences to give them more detail and fluency.

Phonics: Our phonics skill this week will be vowel digraphs -ai and -ay

Vocabulary Strategies: Figurative language and idioms. For example, the idiom “shake a leg” means to hurry up!

Comprehension Skills and Strategies: We will be continuing to work on fact vs. opinion

Math: We are just about finished with Chapter 3. We will review on Monday, and have our test, Tuesday, November 12th.

History: We have started our unit on Japan. We’ve learned that Japan actually means “land of the rising sun” as it is the first country in Asia to see the sun rise over the Pacific Ocean. Be sure to ask them if they remember what Japan means as this will be a question on their test! We’ve also learned that Japan is an island, with four major islands and over 3,000 small islands. Next week, we will learn about rice paddies, and how they are grown, as well as learn about haikus.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions!
