January 9th GAZETTE

SUPERKIDS:
On Monday, we met HOT ROD, our new Superkid. We listened to his song about his dream to become a race car driver and drive a car called “The Fast Cat.” We are reading aloud in small groups the story of “The Flat Cat.” We will continue to blend sounds for letters we know in order to read words. The children are becoming wonderful spellers. They love our classroom Spelling Bees!
*Please, encourage your child to review any of the letters we have learned so far. We have worked with beginning, middle and ending sounds. The children
are all doing great and trying their best!
OUR WORD LIST TEST IS ON WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 15th.
MATH:
Chapter 6 is doing well. The children are enjoying doing tally charts and pictographs. This week we are learning about symmetry, halves and fourths.
The chapter Test will be on January the 16th.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
Learning about Martin Luther King is our new History Unit. We are reading stories about his life and his wonderful dream. We’ll talk about kindness and respect for others as well. We will learn about Martin Luther King’s childhood while reading the book his sister wrote: “My Brother Martin.”
SCIENCE:
This week, we started the last investigation in our Unit “Making and Recording Observations” Unit. The children were introduced to the concepts of patterns. They discovered that patterns exist in drawings, music and speech. Through experiments, we are learning how to determine if an object or organism exhibits symmetry and that symmetrical objects can be divided into equal parts. As a result of their observations, next week, students will recognize patterns in living and non-living things and will discover that the repeating part of a pattern differs between patterns.
