100th Day of Kindergarten at Wood Acres

Dear Parents!

I hope everyone enjoyed their break on Monday! Glad to see everyone back!

Tuesday our class jumped right back in as if we had not missed a day! We started off with our word of the day. Check out your kiddos sentences, they are really working hard on coming up with their own ideas!

This week in Math the kids have focused on addition! We have added by 1,2,3, and 4! They are doing so well with this, I couldn’t be prouder! Keep up the hard work! This week was special as we celebrated our 100th day of school on Thursday! We counted all of the objects we brought in by ones, fives, and tens with our partner! We made cool 100th day glasses, and we worked with a friend to roll dice to get to 100! This was challenging but the kids worked so well together! Our 100th day of school was a success!!

Now that we know all of our vowels: A,E,I,O, and of course U, we have been working to not mix up their sounds. This can get pretty tricky as they all sound very similar. I must say the children are working hard to remember all of their letter sounds. Please remember to have your child practice their words every night and read a book. It really sharpens their reading abilities and helps them to become more comfortable with it!

We began a new unit in Science this week as well, hibernation! We talked about how some animals like birds, migrate or move for the winter. How some animals like bears, hibernate or sleep for the winter. And how some animals like squirrels, adapt during the winter. This is a fun Science unit and the kids seem to really enjoy it!

Thank you to Charlie Thigpen in Mrs. Siegleman’s class for sharing his birthday donuts with us for a Fabulous Fun Friday treat! Charlie celebrated his half birthday today! Thanks again Charlie! They sure were delicious and we appreciate it!

A few updates:

This Sunday is Open House at Wood Acres. Please come check out 1st grade and talk with Mrs. Bratcher anytime from 2p.m. to 4p.m. Be sure to stop by our room to say hi!

Superkids day will be Thursday, January 30th! Please have your child come to school dressed as the Superkid of their choice! I cannot wait to see how everyone looks!

Valentine’s Day information will be sent out next week! Be on the lookout for an email regarding that!

Winter conferences are coming up February 18th and 19th. Susan has created a sign up genius account. If you have a child in preschool, do not worry about signing up as I will sign them up. If you have a child that is an older sibling and their teachers also have a sign up, please schedule your child back to back!

Don’t forget the word of the week is: Addition

With love,
Ms. Porto and Ms. Kathie
