The Porto Express

Dear Parents!

We have entered and completed the first book of the Superkids club which had us focusing on the letters B and R! I am happy to report that everyone did well on their first club word list test. The Superkids have officially decided on how to decorate their meeting spot or the bus. As a Fabulous Fun Friday task, each child in our class was able to decorate the same bus! On Monday we will shrink them and turn them into their very own key chain! I can’t wait for you to see them! We have now entered the second book in the club which focuses on the letters N and M. Please be sure to have your child continue to practice their words every day as they continue to get harder!

We closed out chapter 8 in math learning about subtraction and moved onto money! What a fun concept. This week we introduced the penny, nickel, dime, and quarter! This sure is a tricky task! We had the grand opening of our class store called Porto Express on Friday of this week as well! Here, the kids can practice money with me while buying something from our store. This is a fun way for them to learn the different coins. Not only did we learn the different coins, but we also learned that one nickel is the same as five pennies! Wow, what a concept! The learning didn’t stop there though. They also learned how to count on starting from 5 cents. Keep the learning up kiddos!

This week in Social Studies, we wrapped up our lessons on the Mount Rushmore presidents. We talked about Abraham Lincoln or honest Abe, and Theodore Roosevelt or Teddy. Did you know that the name teddy bear comes from Theodore’s nickname? Yep it’s true! This wonderful president was so concerned about shooting a bear that a toymaker found out and named the toy after him. Talk about famous right?! In honor of Teddy Roosevelt, we decided to bring in teddy bears on Thursday!

Fabulous Fun Friday had us visiting the third graders at the Living Museum! Here the kiddos visited the third grade class in the multi-purpose room and learned all about different important figures of our world. We meet Albert Einstein, Abraham Lincoln, Sally Ride, Helen Keller, Princess Diana, Thomas Edison, Nikola Tesla, and Coretta Scott King. Boy, was that a fun experience for the kids to see the third graders dressed up as someone famous and also learn a few facts about each of them. We headed back to our classroom and worked on coloring the newly decorated Superkids bus. To close out this fabulous day, some of the kids who finished their buses were able to shop at Porto Express! They sure did love this experience. I can’t even begin to tell you the amount of praise I received for being able to purchase something fun at the store!

Please remember that Donuts for Dads is Friday March 6th. We need all dads present so we can celebrate how wonderful each of you are. The celebration will start between 8:45 and 9a.m. and will end around 10a.m.

The word of the week is back: dime

With love,
Ms. Porto and Ms. Kathie
