Fall is my favorite time of year! As we get ready for Halloween and Thanksgiving, we are busy with many activities and crafts. I can’t wait for the cooler weather so we can do more learning outside, also.
We finished Superkid units 3 and 4 last week and had our test Friday. A new word list will come home tomorrow for unit 5 and 6. This is where it starts to get hard! Please go over these words at home. They should know how to say them (spelling is a bonus!) when asked.
We will work on our last Footprint for the quarter this week in class. We will start back up the week of October 29th for 2nd quarter.
The pumpkin book report is due October 25th, and we will present Thursday and Friday of that week. I gave all families the book report sheet at conferences. As a recommendation, I would get the story out of the way before working on the pumpkin. There are also picture examples on Shutterfly. If you need another book report form, let me know ASAP.
Our Halloween celebration will be Wednesday, 31st from 2:00 to 3:00. Please make sure your child brings their costume in a bag that morning. DO NOT have them come to school wearing their costume. We have many other things going on during the day and this would be a huge distraction for them. They will have time to change before we start our party. In order for them to participate in passing out candy, they need to bring in 16 pieces of candy to share with others. They may bring in their Halloween bag to collect the candy, or I will have extra Publix bags, too.
I participate in the Bert Show’s ‘Big Thank You’ which hopes to provide a letter to every service member stationed throughout the world. The goal is for each member to receive a letter at Thanksgiving. I have been doing this for the past 7 years and enjoying talking to the kids about making others feel happy, especially around the holidays. I encourage you to write a letter at home as well. If you do, I can mail it in!
The room moms will post information about the Thanksgiving luncheon soon. All, if not most parents will need to participate and volunteer to bring in food for the celebration. All parents and grandparents are invited to this event. Due to a large number of people attending this event, I would need a count from each family so we can all plan accordingly to have enough food for everyone. There will be a 20 minute presentation after our lunch. Our event will last from 11-12. A formal invitation will come home in the beginning of November.
As we all eagerly anticipate Fall to come, we continue to move ahead with our first “Fall” like event, tasting apples. We tasted six apples last Friday and everyone picked a favorite. Our outside board will transition to a writing about which apple is their favorite and why. Expect to see this change over the course of the week.
We are finishing up Superkids unit 1&2 Friday of this week. We will have our end of level test next Monday and word list test Tuesday 18th. We are working hard on /th/ and /wh/ blends. Continued practice at home will also help with memorization and familiarity of the words.
I had an opportunity to look over everyone’s Footprints, and they did a great job! Keep it up! Another will come home Monday and will be due Friday.
We will start chapter 2 in math this week. Our chapter 1 test will be tomorrow (Monday).
We are continuing our senses unit in Science and will move onto ‘touch’ this week.

Communication is key for a successful school year and this page will provide you with another easy way to be “in the know” about the happenings @ the Woods, especially in our class. Autumn is an amazing season at Wood Acres as the changing colors never disappoint. Yes, it also brings shorter days and chillier weather, but we still pack lots of learning –inside and out- into each day.
I will send out a conference signup through Shutterfly shortly. If you have not logged on to Shutterfly yet, now is the time. I will also set up the Superkids home program so you and your child can read, play games, or print ‘home printables.’
During our conferences, we will discuss upcoming projects and questions you may have so far. As I mentioned at our Parent Orientation Meeting, we will casually walk through and discuss the report card as well.
We plan to meet with our book buddies for the first time this Friday. They will be creating a mystery apple with their buddy, for the class to guess which one is there’s.
Our first big gathering and event will be Constitution Day. More details will follow closer we get to the event…all students will receive a Wood Acres Constitution Day shirt to wear for the day!

As of yesterday, all Mother’s Day crafts come home…and one is breakable…make sure all backpacks were checked. Hope you enjoy reading the sweet notes, letters, coupons, and pictures your children took time to draw and write.
Here are the last important dates of the school year…10 days left!
14th: 4th quarter book report and project are due, please use the book report form that was sent home weeks ago.
18th: All Footprints should be handed in; a sticky note was attached in homework folders Thursday to those that still needed to complete theirs.
22nd: Parent breakfast and performance 8:30-9:30
24th: End of year party (a separate email will be sent with details)
25th: last day of school, half day
You will receive a formal invitation to the parent breakfast and performance later this week via your child’s homework folder.
PLEASE let me know how many family members plan to attend the breakfast and performance since I am purchasing the food. I want to make sure I have enough for everyone including the kids.

This week will be the last week of spelling, math timed test, and homework. We will also finish up Superkids by the end of the week and will take our end of level test, hopefully, Friday (or following Monday). We will also finish up our math unit on double-digit addition with carrying. If you are able to practice a few math problems over the weekend, that would be wonderful. For many, they are grasping the concept, but a few are not remembering to carry the ‘1’ over to the tens column. Ex. 26+9=35 and 36+15=51
This past Thursday was the last day for us to check out books at the library. ALL books need to be returned Wednesday or Thursday.
Please remember to order lunch and send in a snack for the last few days of school. With the days getting hotter, it would help to send in a water bottle for them to keep at their desk.
Final report cards and test scores will be mailed after Memorial Day.

We are almost done with testing! We will finish up Tuesday and will celebrate with Field Day this Friday. Please take a moment to read and follow this detailed email with instructions for Field Day.
If you plan for your child to use Treehouse Friday morning (or afternoon), they will be taken to the park and returned after field day. Please let me know if your child will be using Treehouse that day! This is a must!
Fuller’s Park 3499 Robinson Rd. Marietta (off Roswell and Robinson).
DO NOT come to school that day…we will not be here.
Please do not drop your child off and leave; you will need to sign them in.
Our day will begin at 9:00 and will end with a closing ceremony around 2:00.
Please arrive at Fullers Park by 9:00 a.m.; showing up late will prevent teams and games from starting on time. I will be there at 8:45.
I will need a parent there with me in the morning to assist with checking in and getting lunches organized.
Please look for us as you drop your child off. We will be collecting lunches and I will be signing your children in.
You will pick your child up at Fullers Park by 2:00 and you MUST see me so I know they are leaving. Please do not tell another teacher…you must let me know.
*I recommend getting there a few minutes before 2, since most times we are already done by then.
Snack and lunch:
EVERYTHING must have your child’s first and last name on it.
Everything needs to be disposable so it can be thrown away after lunch. Use gallon sized zip-lock bags (labeled) or paper bag (labeled) to hold lunches.
Please do not send tubs/containers/Thermos of food; we will not have a place to store it.
I will have a cooler with ice to keep food cold. Sandwiches are the best option for this type of outdoor activity.
Send a water bottle or Gatorade/Powerade bottle (labeled) for your child to drink during lunch.
Goldfish will be the snack provided by the school; if you want to send something extra, that is fine…it just needs to be eaten fairly quickly.
We will have bottles of water to pass out at the end of the day.
What to wear:
Mrs. Goodson has asked that everyone wear tennis shoes that fit and tie.
There are many games with kicking involved, and lots of shoes have been flying off feet at recess and PE. That can be dangerous to others as well as during running games and other foot related events. Make sure tennis shoes are worn with socks and laces are tied tight!
I will pass out the T-Shirts the day before Field Day to ensure they do not get lost or forgotten.
Your child must come to Fuller’s Park dressed in their correct field day T-shirt (not last years!)
Athletic type shorts (girls/boys) or capri/crop pants (girls) will be best. No jeans or skirts.
If your child brings a sweater/sweatshirt, make sure it is labeled with their name inside. It will be chilly in the morning, 47.
Sunscreen should be applied before arriving at the park. Your child can wear a hat, just make sure their name is somewhere on it, in case it gets lost.
Unlike last year, your child might not be on my team. Each team is made up of a few 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. If we stayed together as a class, we wouldn’t have much of a chance against the older grades!
Lastly, you are all welcome to come watch and cheer us on! It is a large area, so all are welcome. The seating is concrete, so you might want to bring a comfortable lawn chair!

Next week starts standardized testing for grades 1-8. Please note that all grades and testing will vary based on grade level. 1st grade will test Monday 16th through Tuesday 24th and we will test from 9:00-11:00.
• We will begin testing promptly at 9:00 every day. It is very important that your child arrives by 8:30 each day to get prepared.
• Please make sure your child gets a good night’s rest and eats a healthy and satisfying breakfast each morning. We will have a snack, however, the times we eat snack each day will vary due to the test.
• PLEASE pack a healthy snack. There are still a few kids that are not bringing a snack in. Please double check to make sure a snack is in their backpack before heading to school. Thanks!
• Attendance next week is very important. It is imperative that your child arrives on time and is ready for the day. If they arrive after 9:00, they will wait in the office until the test is over and we will need to schedule a make-up time.
• Parents, please do not enter our building to drop off lunches or other items during testing times. You may drop off items in the office if need be and they will deliver the item to me after testing is done.
• Your child may bring a chapter book to read during ‘wait time’ at their desk. I would highly recommend sending in a water bottle. They can also keep this on the floor by their desk.
• You do NOT need to bring/send in extra pencils. I use a particular brand and have enough for the students to have this week.
Next week will be a “no homework” week.
Field day will be Friday, April 27th, provided it does not rain. This is a drop-off and pick-up event. Your child will NOT come to school that day. You are more than welcome to come and stay…bring a chair and pack a lunch! I will also need a few parents to help me out with snack and lunch. If you are interested, let me know. You will receive more information later next week about times and field day details.
Our Field trip to the Botanical Gardens is on Tuesday, May 1st. There will be details to follow along with who will chaperone me on the trip. Please be patient with me, I will give information after testing week.
The book report is due Monday, May 14th.
7 FOOTPRINTS on ANY book are due Friday, May 18th. You can also hand them in weekly as we have been doing all school year.
Our Spring party was a blast. We had egg relay races, balloon races, and of course, the egg hunt. Thank you to those who donated your time and food!!
What a strange reality of knowing we only have 1 more quarter to go before summer vacation!! The end of 3rd quarter was yesterday and report cards will go home this coming Thursday.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day. The traps are set to catch the Leprechauns over the weekend and everyone is very excited to see the mess they plan to leave behind Monday morning.
This week we started unit 7 in Superkids this week and we are working on the trickers /ar/, /or,/ and /ear/ which all sound like /er/. Our words are getting harder and harder to spell, and I encourage them to practice these words at home. I sent home the new word list this week in Friday folders.
As you saw on HW this week, we are starting to work with money and we will go onto time soon. Our 12’s test is this coming week, and the following week will be a review of all the addition problems. We will not start subtraction until we come back from break. Again, I very much encourage you to work on subtraction facts with your child now. Subtraction is definitely a harder concept for them to grasp and get in the two-minute time frame.
We finished up ‘Discovering Life’ in science and we started our last unit, ‘Weather.’

PLEASE send in your child’s purple reading folder on their scheduled reading date. Almost half the class did not have theirs brought back this week and it makes it very challenging for her to read with your child and move them forward with their books.
Shutterfly has many new dates: Spring party, Spring testing, end of year events and due dates.
Quarter 4 is for all the “Un-Birthdays” aka…Summer birthday!. If your child has a Summer birthday and would like to celebrate between now and the end of the year, please let me know the day you would like to send in a treat.
Spring Party: 11:00-12:00 or 12:30….depending on the length of games.
There is a sign-up sheet posted on Shutterfly for the Spring party.
If your child would like to participate in the egg hunt, they will need to send in 12 plastic, pre-filled eggs, already SEALED!!! Please, no chocolate….it melts and ants quickly go to the hidden eggs on the playground if they are filled with chocolate. The eggs can be filled with hard candies, toys, coins, erasers…etc. All eggs need to be brought in by Wednesday, March 28th.
Parents who volunteer need to help with games. Please speak with Terry or Loran if you have a game idea you would like to lead. We will not do centers for this party; everything will be done whole group and students are encouraged to work with partners.
We will start with games outside, then do an egg hunt on the playground (during our scheduled recess time), come in and have a few snacks, and evenly distribute the eggs. We will have lunch around 12 (might be after depending on the length of games). You are able to pick up or take your child home after the party.
As a reminder, all kids should be picked up at 1 or shortly after. Anyone left in my room after 1:15 will be taken to the office to await parent pick up.
As mentioned in our conferences:
4th quarter project and book report are based on any book of their choosing. Chapter books are o.k. The project can be a diorama, poster board, or anything they want to create for their character. I will send home the writing paper next week. This project and writing paper are due Monday, May 14th.
4th quarter Footprints are also done at home. It should be done from any book they choose; if it is a chapter book, they can condense 2 or 3 chapters into 1 footprint. They still need to write the footprint in the same format with first, next, then, and last. There are 7 footprints in quarter 4.
I WILL not have a set due date per Footprint, however, I would recommend finishing 1 per week. They can be written on any lined paper. If you need paper, please let me know by putting a note in your child’s Friday folder. I will send the paper home this week if it is asked for.
Any NOT handed in by the due date, Friday, May 18th, will reflect on their report card as an incomplete grade.
Reading independently at home will be very important in quarter 4. In class, we are continuing to discuss plot, setting, problem, and solution. As recommended in our conferences, stopping your child while reading to answer those questions will force them to read for meaning, not just read the words.
Lastly, there has been lots of sloppy and rushed work over the past few weeks. Some students have worked with Mrs. Seigleman and some have worked one on one with me over the weeks. Regardless, if the work is sloppy or messy, I am having them do it over again.
Thank you for all your help with all these little tasks, I know it isn’t easy!!

Report cards came home on Thursday. Please send them back to me signed tomorrow. You will get a paper copy once I get my original back. Thanks!!
Our spring party will be this Friday, 30th, at 11:00. We plan to use our recess time during the egg hunt so our party does not interfere with any other grades/classes that go to the playground that day. Our party will last from 11:00-12:00 (or 12:30). If it rains, we will play games inside the classroom(s).
** Please send in 12 sealed plastic eggs. Please, NO CHOCOLATE (it can melt). Eggs can be pre-filled with coins, non-chocolate candies, small toys/trinkets.
**These can be handed in as early as Monday. All eggs need to be handed in by Wednesday (28th).
** Your child can bring their Easter basket to collect all the eggs from the playground.
Everyone who wants to participate needs to hand in eggs. If your child does not want to participate, please let me know so I can find other arrangements for them.
I sent home sheets of lined paper for those that asked. If you need paper, please let me know and I will send it home tomorrow.
As a reminder, 7 Footprints are due Friday, May 18th.
As I have said numerous times, I would recommend handing in 1 per week instead of waiting until the final due date to hand in all 7.
This week got away from me…and I completely forgot to put them in Friday folders. They will come home in tomorrows homework folder. Students will pick any book of their choosing, create a project, and write the report like a footprint. Again, please no poster or drawing on a piece of paper. It must be multi-dimensional. Please look on Shutterfly for examples under ‘Parent Information’ tab.
Spring Break assignment:
The next board that I display is your child’s Spring break adventures (outside the classroom). Please plan to take some pictures over the break and send them in when we return so they can be displayed on our board. There are two pages with small descriptions boxes that will go along with the photos (4 pictures are needed). We will work on this when we return unless you would like to do it over the break. Please let me know if you would like the packet over the break to work on.
I need 100% participation with the pictures, please. Thank you.

Beginning tomorrow, Ms. Staggs will read with each student individually. Mrs. Peltier and she met last week to go over the “system” on how to assign the books to your child. PLEASE send the books, folder, and sticker book back on your child’s reading day in order for them to continue to progress throughout the year.
Quarter 3 is coming to an end…already!! The last day in qt.3 is March 16th and report cards will come home on the 22nd.
March is a busy month. We will begin our Leprechaun traps this week and will have them set up to catch those pesky Leprechauns next Friday before we leave for the day. To prepare you….and please DO NOT tell your child…I make our room an absolute disaster and they LOVE it!!
I like to leave treats and treasures around the room…left by the Leprechauns. If you would like to donate items, please feel free. I can always use themed pencils, stickers, or other goodies. I am not sure who signed up for a snack that day, but it is usually something easy like green rice crispy treats and green juice or Gatorade. This is just a snack drop off event.
We will have our Spring celebration on Friday, March 30th from 11:00-12:30 with dismissal at 1:00. There will be more info to come, but every child will need to send in 12 PLASTIC, already filled and sealed eggs for the egg hunt (which will take place on the playground). This is an event that many parents like to volunteer for, but please be prepared to help and do lots of work!! Terry and Loran will get the details from me this week and will send out a volunteer list of outdoor games ideas along with snacks and drinks.
We have the 9’s and 10’s math test this week, and the 11’s and 12’s test the week after. There will be one week with no math test before Spring Break. When we return from break, we start subtraction facts, first with the 12’s. I would highly suggest beginning practicing those facts over the break, if not earlier.
As we discussed in conferences, quarter 4’s Footprint are done independently and 9 need to be completed by the end of the year. Instead of 9, I am going to change that number to 7.
All 7 Footprints need to be handed in by Friday, May 11th.
Students will present their last project of the year on Monday, May 14th. There will be more information to come in two weeks. This is an at home project and can be any of their choosing. Please no posters or drawing on a piece of paper, we are looking for creativity. The project can be constructed from materials found around the house, old boxes to make a diorama, and students are encouraged to be imaginative.
Last, I will not be here this Friday; I will be in Orlando for a wedding. Mrs. Thorogood will sub for my class. Unfortunately, we are still needing lots of reminders of how to behave and show respect in our specials classes and when there is a guest teacher in the class. I will implement a new behavior system at the beginning of quarter 4. I ask for your continued support and loving reminders that you give your children. It takes a village sometimes!!
A huge THANK YOU to the parents that made our Dr. Seuss breakfast special and delicious. All the students LOVED the green eggs, ham, bagels, and juice. Thank You!!!
